Winter Wellness: Nutrition and Supplementation

Update: It is still cold... but we are going to continue our Winter Wellness series anyways.

This week’s topic: Nutrition & Supplementation!

As we said in our post last week, good quality forage should be the base to any feeding program. How do you determine your forage is “good quality”? We recommend hay testing to know exactly what you are feeding. Horses require a minimum of 1.5-2% of their body weight in forage per day to maintain healthy gut function. Remember, this can increase up to 3% in the winter to support the increased metabolism to keep them warm.

Now that you are feeding the proper amount of high quality forage… what can you supplement your equine athlete with?  There are so many options out there, and we’ve seen in many of your feed rooms, we know they can be as full as a grocery store!

Our recommendation: Make supplementation easier and stop over doing the supplements by finding a high quality mineral supplement that covers all the necessary bases. By doing this, you will be saving yourself time, money and the guessing game behind supplementation.

Core Balance Training Formulas offer a complete and scientific solution to the nutritional guessing game. The Training Formulas are properly balanced formulations consisting of everything your equine athlete needs in just one bucket and specifically designed for overall health of your horse including vitamins, minerals, joints, electrolytes, hoof health, immune support, and digestive system protection. Training Formulas are offered in either Alfalfa Blend or Grass Hay-only formula to match your horse’s specific forage program.

Does winter call for any “special” supplementation?

In dry winter forage there is a lack of natural vitamin E which is an anti-inflammatory that helps with coat and hoof quality and combats free radicals.

Equiflax Omega Oil is an excellent source of natural vitamin E. Plus, flax oil is by far one of the richest sources of Omega-3, and has an excellent Omega-3 (anti-inflammatory) to Omega-6 (pro-inflammatory) ratio. This excellent source of omegas provides your horse a multitude of benefits that targets joint strength, digestive health, recovery and skin and hoof support.
