Sports Therapy Lecture Series 2 – Ulcers & The Equine Athlete

“Ulcers and the Equine Athlete” – the 2nd edition of the Energy Equine Sports Therapy Lecture Series, brought to you by Boehringer Ingelheim.

In the second installment of the 2019 Energy Equine Sports Therapy Lecture series we are diving head-first into the complicated world of intestinal physiology and its effects on the athletic structure of the horse.

9:00 – Doors Open

9:30-11:00 – Dr. Jean-Yin Tan of the University of Calgary – “An Inside Look at Ulcers”

Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Tan will present on Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome from an internal veterinary standpoint. Her focus will be on the signs and symptoms, the scoring system and the diagnosis and treatment of gastric ulceration. Dr. Tan’s talk will incorporate video of scoping sessions performed on horses with ulcers and will feature a Q&A session with the audience.

11:30 -12:00 – Dr. Doug Myers of Boehringer Ingelheim – “The Canadian Perspective”

A run-down of new research on the treatment of ulcers in Canadian equine populations.

1:00-2:30 – Tina Watkins of InHandEquineTherapy – “The Big Picture”

Equine Sports Therapist, Tina Watkins, EST, EEBW3, presents the musculoskeletal perspective on the before and after of ulcers. Watkins believes that so many of us have horses talking to us that we ignore, she feels as riders we need to be advocates for our horses and to really listen to them. Watkin’s talk will encompass the biomechanics of how ulcers effect the performance horse, what a rider may feel in a horse suffering more ulcers and massage techniques for the equine athlete.

2:45-3:30 – Live Scoping Demonstration with Energy Equine
